Transgender Teen Attacked in School
By: Carlos Shamburger

As everyone is aware on October 3, 2017 Kylie Perez was attacked and her school hallway Tuesday on her way to class.
Kylie Perez is a freshman at East Side High School. She told a reporter that she has been bullied ever since her transition from Justin to Kylie. According to reports, severely students had attacked her in the halls. They have been suspended but no charges had been pressed.
Newark Public Schools’ official statement is  that they stand with the LGBTQ+ students. The buck is being passed on this issue . The Newark School Board has done nothing to prevent or protect these students from situations like this happening again. This is still an ongoing investigation but no action is happening.
LGBT students have felt unsafe in school for almost a while. There are anti-bullying laws in place but they hardly do anything to prevent students from being attacked.  These students should be able to enjoy school and not worry about bullies. Kylie Perez is a prime example because she has to be careful of her surrounding. Many lgbt communities has rallied with her in front of East Side high to stand up for what is right. Kylie is not going to let this go without a fight.
No charges have been pressed and officials claims, “This is an ‘allegedly bias crime’.” When will justice be served for Kylie and when will lgbt students start feeling safe in their own schools.

If you want to help, you can join any local lgbt community center and help Kylie stand up for what is right and help millions of lgbt students feel safe in their school.

  3. Wow. The amount of teens that have been harassed is insane. Hopefully NPS does something in the near future so situations such as this one can be prevented.
