The Road to College

College Deadlines Are Stressful
by, Destanie Jefferson-Lee

You expect your senior year to be the easiest year for you because you did everything your freshman thru junior year to make this true. Nope. Instead, all you have to think or stress about is college. You think the hard part is done but is the hardest part. Student feel overwhelmed by all the deadlines when they just want it to be over with already. Senior, Enaysia Green says, “It’s a lot of pressure to say the right thing, get the right scores, pick the right school-- when there is no such thing. It’s a lot of research and deadlines, which doesn’t help. On top of my regular senior duties. [it’s] stressful and still trying to have social life… so overwhelming.” applications, essays, deadlines are a lot on students who are already involved in many things at school.

Other students say sometime they just want to give up but decide not to. Shamonique added, “But it’s stressful though, it consists of a lot of attention, you must be focused on what you’re specifically doing. [but] in the end, it is all worth it.” Karin Adams interjects, “this is probably one of the most busiest years of high school. But once you get the hang of things it’s not so bad.”

Most students feel stressed, overwhelmed, drained and tired. But they refuse to give up because they want to be able to walk across the stage with their diploma in June-- knowing they have a plan for what comes next.

FAFSA Fall Kick-Off At NJIT

By, Nefertiti Cooper

On Saturday, September 30th, 2017 Newark Public Schools Office of Student Support Services and NJIT Trio representatives, organized the first FAFSA Fall Kick Off Workshop. At the workshop, students and parents were informed about FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid) information, and tips on how to efficiently apply. They were able to ask questions and obtain knowledge on the rules and regulations that will be beneficial to their student’s upcoming college educations. All grades and ages were welcome, “It’s never too late to start learning about your future” a NJIT Trio representative explained.
Students from all over Newark, University High School, Science Park High School, Arts High School, Newark Tech High School, Weequahic High School, Barringer High School, to name a few, came out to learn more about an important aspect of their college enrollment process. The organizers provided computers for everyone to create their FAFSA student and parent IDs. At the end of the presentation, students were verbally tested on the information they obtained, and were awarded with giveaway prizes for correctly answering. Each participant also received a cute shirt with the catchy Cardi B lyrics, “We make money moves”.
The FAFSA workshop was very beneficial and helped my mother and I feel more confident and assured with completing the process. During the workshop I met NJIT teacher Ms. Moncrieff, she helped my mother understand her income tax information and overall assisted us through the process. Informative workshops like this are very essential for high school students; they are given the opportunity to meet helpful representatives that are willing to guide and support. It is beneficial for positive people, such as the NPS Office of Student Support Services and NJIT Trio representatives, to construct beneficial workshops to encourage students and lighten the stress of the college process.

Rutgers Open House
by Majid Johnson

On  October 4th we took a trip to Rutgers University New Brunswick campus.

The Open House opened me up to an idea of what to expect if I was to attend Rutgers University. I really liked the environment and the campus itself. WHY

They gave us good tips for preparing in college and what to do in college to stay on the right track.

The Campus Tour was great it and it was so many things to see during it.

This makes me want to go to Rutgers even more then I did before. Its huge campus has so much to offer its overwhelming honestly.
