On the Job Hunt

HELP WANTED:

NPS Students Seek Jobs in Senior Year

by Kyle Wiggins

Several Newark Public School students went looking for jobs this past weekend. They arrived at a library in the central area of Newark for the public job fair. There were several different company representatives there that the students got to sit down and talk to. Some engaged in small interviews and others filled out applications to have an interview at another time.
Many popular stores there were; Abercrombie, Skechers, AAO, Zumez, Crocs, and Hilfiger. These stores are seeking people to work for them during the holiday season from Oct. 15th-January 30th. All applicants are required to work on all of the holidays in this time period.

Interviews are still underway. They take place at Jersey Gardens Mall in Elizabeth, NJ. Most students who have had a couple interviews said that it has been exhausting. “The constant going back and forth from the mall and back home. Being scheduled for 2nd interviews. Having multiple interviews in one day and being asked the same questions in every one.”  -Justin Watkins.

Some students were lucky enough to get the positions at their first interview. One student who is 18 just so happened to walk into a store looking for clothes with his friends when the manager approached them and asked their ages. I’m told that he wasn’t looking for minors and that whoever is 18 can get a job today. He took the student to the food court for an interview and then gave him his working hours for the next week. This student, Jose Marte, told me, “I can’t believe that just happened! I’m about to be getting this money!

Other students already have working positions in the mall. Some enjoy it, while others find it irritating. “My job is tireless effort. I’m always standing up. I’m forced to talk to people and the day never seems to end.” says senior, Clinton  Adu-Agyei.

It all boils down to the money. We need it and the only way to get it is with a job.

Comments

  1. Exactly. They don't pay you enough to be going bACK FORTH or interviews ad stuff. It makes it less exciting to have a job.

  4. Good article, this would have been even more helpful if it was bought to student’s attention before hand.

  5. I tried to feel out for a seasonal job once & didn’t like it to much traveling back & forth & there is there is a large possibility that after those 3 months are up you won’t have a job at that place anymore
