When it comes to influence throughout University High School, there are so many different kinds that you can walk in and be inspired by a Top 25 student, and walk out inspired by a band dancer.
In a school of almost 600 students, and 10 months in a school year, there’s less than a 2% chance that you’ll ever make Student of the Month. Devon made that 2%. Being a responsible, hardworking, and determined sophomore in the Top 5 of his class is something that put him in the spotlight of Student of the Month.
Q: What effort did you do to become a student of the month?
A: “I was not aware that I would even become the student of the month for putting the high amount of effort I put in. This is an everyday thing for me. I am someone who is about service. I always feel the need to take on a leadership role whenever I feel like my service is needed. “
Q: What examples do you show to the other 10th graders? Do you have advice for other 10th graders looking for this achievement?
A: “I show the 10th graders that you can do whatever you put your mind too, and it is all about the balance. As long as your studies come first, you can put yourself to use in other fields. Advice I would give to people trying to make it to be student of the month, is that you must always stay driven and that you must not think about the accolades you will receive, but think about the service that you are providing, and how it will make you look as a person.”
Q: What subject(s) do you excel in?
A: “Well, not to sound arrogant, but I excel in all my subjects. I do however, feel like Spanish, Law, and Honors U.S. History I are subjects that I exemplify mastery in.”

Q: Did you know you were going to be nominated to be the student of the month?
A: “I did not know that I would become the student of the month. To be quite frank, all I remember was one week I was doing so much as I could to develop an action plan to drastically change the school for the better...Shhhh don’t tell nobody!... and then Mr. Mendez came up to my Spanish class and pulled me out. He took a picture of me and said ‘Congratulations! You are the student of the month’”
Q: Once your month ends will continue to show effort and work hard?
A: “Of course, especially for someone like me, where this type of performance is natural. In my opinion, being honored once, makes you want to be honored repeatedly. I will not lie, if I can, I will try in my best effort to become the student of the month again, and I will attempt to do that with my eyes closed.”
Q: Why do you think you were chosen for student of the month?
A: “I think I was chosen to be the student of the month because of the fact that I was able to work with Mr. Mendez and other amazing faculty in the Home of the Phoenix, to not only make the school well for its present, but taking action to rise up the challenges that will come in the future. There is in fact a lot of complaining in this school about many different problems, and I believe the part that made me the student of the month was that I proposed many reasonable solutions to these problems. They should be being discussed very soon!”
Q: What are your current goals for this school year?
A: “Wow! That’s a question where if I were to really tell you, I would be giving you an entire essay, but what I can say is that my goals for this current school year, is to make sure that my studies remain a priority, developing my brand, and maybe a couple changes that’ll happen within the school starting next school year.”
Q: What are two of your future goals?
A: “Two of my future goals:
1. To be happy! That covers a wide variety of things.
2. To leave my mark on the world before my time is up!”
All in all, being a hard worker in school, who’s focused on everything you’re supposed to can be beneficial in the long run. Devon is a great example of that. Congratulations on this recognition-- you deserve it!
