Alumni Spotlight: Hassanah Blake

The Best of the Best!

Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing a University High School Alumni that I get to see everyday. Our very own Vice-Principal Ms. Hassanah Blake. During our interview she graciously answered the following questions:

 What college did you attend after graduating from University?  

• "I attended Kean University where I earned a B.A. in English, Seton Hall University where I earned a M.A. in School Counseling and then Seton Hall University again where I earned an Ed.S in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Supervision."

Do you think UHS adequately prepared you for college?

• "Absolutely! University High School equipped me with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to achieve my dreams. I was even able to earn my bachelor’s degree from Kean University in 3 years while living on my own and working full-time!"

 What do you do now?

• "I’ve been with Newark Public Schools for 12 years and have worked in many capacities. From High School English Teacher, to Guidance Counselor, to Teacher Coach, to now Vice Principal of my Alma Mater, I am truly grateful to have come full circle and to Pay It Forward as a Newark Native and proud city resident."

What is your fondest memories of being at University?

• "My fondest memories of UHS are of my 10th Grade English Teacher, Ms. Howard, who inspired me to pursue a career in Education, my Chorus Teacher, Ms. James, who taught me character and strengthened my love of music for four years, and my guidance counselor, Ms. Mahon, who never stopped believing in me. Who I am today is largely because of who these incredible women were to me!"

What advice would you give to your current University students?

• "Many magical people have roots in Newark, NJ and even University High School! Never stop dreaming and always remember that the Phoenix ALWAYS Rises!"

I must say that I have a new found respect for Ms. Blake after this interview. I think Ms.Blake is guiding us toward the right path by helping kids like myself be better. Like she said, “Paying It Forward” and that’s what life is about. She is an incredible person and is always ready to give back to the people and her city. She is simply the best!
