Senior Year: Reflections

Leaving the Nest

by Me’ajah Jackson

In small cities like ours, we grow up unable to see past the late night basketball games or prom. School seems to be day in, day out, until one day, you are a senior and it is just about time to leave.

In the flash of a moment, it is time to leave your house, your school, and everything you have ever known. How do we deal with this sudden deployment? How do we say goodbye to our entire lives?

I think the most important thing to consider when leaving high school is that you are leaving a small city for the world. It is time to go out and explore. It is time to find your purpose. Essex County will be here when you get back. It is now finally time to live your own life. In college, you can join new clubs, study abroad, volunteer, and meet a new person every single day. This is the door opening up to the rest of your life.

Leaving high school can be heartbreaking. I encourage graduating seniors to take a walk down memory lane. Volunteer at your old elementary school. Hug your parents and tell them you love them. Drive down your favorite streets, blasting music and waving at your friends.. These are the small comforts you will not be able to return to once you leave. Do not take them for granted.

Yes, you are leaving the Friday night games. You must say goodbye to pep rallies, snow days, favorite teachers, and best friends. Yet, the things you leave behind are so incomparable with the things you are moving toward. The rest of your life awaits, and no one knows what it may hold.

Graduating seniors, you have been given the greatest gift possible: a clean slate. You could attend college or vocational school, join the army, or move to Africa. The entire world is awaiting you. These people and places you are meant to meet and see are out there. Go and find them. Carpe diem, seize the day.

I have no argument that graduation is an emotional occasion. It entails packing up your entire life to face the unknown. However, all of these things that have made up your entire life thus far are just one small fraction of what you will experience. High school has been invaluable, but like my head on June 18th, it is time to put a cap on it.
