University High School’s Debate Team
By: Dominique Joseph
Though the debate season has not yet started, we are all very eager to hear what it is like for a high school debater on the day of a match.
Over the course of this week, I had the pleasure of interviewing senior, Ryan Hemnarine, a debater, on what his thoughts are before he goes up against his opponent.
Ryan says, “[he] thinks about how good or bad the person he is up against is.” He is nervous because he may make the mistake of letting his opponent’s argument out do his own.
“As I get in my zone, I start to pay less and less attention to my opponent and more on the fact that I will win, “ explains Hemnarine.
From speaking with Ryan, I learned that no matter how great your argument is, it is still up to the judges to decide whether or not you win. It gets very intense as the match goes on and when you are up against someone good, you have to be even better.
Debate is almost here, be on the lookout. First match for seniors will be October 28th at East Side High School in Newark, NJ. The middle school competes on October 21st also at East Side High.
